How much does it cost for pest control services?

It’s the day before your most important meeting of the year.  You ask your spouse to take care of the kids tonight, help you get to bed early, and make sure you don’t over sleep in the morning.  You go to bed, and all is well.  About 2:00 AM, you have to use the restroom.  You stumble out of bed, feeling like you’ve just been shot with a tranquilizer gun.  With shoulders drooped and fighting to push your eye lids up; you stagger to the restroom without turning on any lights.  In the dark, you think you see something move.  No!  You know you see something move!  It’s a, GIANT, bug.  “BAM!!!!!” adrenaline surges through your body, slaps you in the face, and screams: WAKE UP!  WAKE UP!  YOU’RE NOT GOING IN THERE!!!!  So off you go to the other end of your home, this time turning on every light as you go, because you’re freaked out about that, GIANT, bug.  You toss and turn for the next four hours, and just as the adrenaline is wearing off and your eye lids are getting heavy again, you hear, beep-beep-beep-beep.  The most annoying sound the planet has ever known.  Then you here the words “Honey it's time to wake up, you have that meeting today.”
As soon as you get a chance, you phone your spouse and say, “Call Goliath Termite and Pest Control, right now, and tell them to do what ever it takes to get rid of those stinking bugs, no matter what it costs!”
This story illustrates the painful, hidden, cost of not having a regular pest control service.  If you would like our recommendation in regards to a service, best suited for your needs, along with a quote, please contact us by clicking here or call 817-508-9100, and someone will be happy to help you.

Are the products Goliath uses okay for my children and pets to be around?

Yes.  Goliath Termite and Pest Control provides service for people with children and pets every day and has been doing so safely since 1998.
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) classifies chemicals according to their potential toxicity, and requires each chemical to be marked with one of three key words (danger, warning, or caution) to notify the user of its potential toxicity.
Danger signifies a chemical within the category of most potential toxicity.  If you look through the chemicals under your kitchen sink or in your garage you will find the key word danger on some of the labels.  Warning signifies a chemical within the category of mid range potential toxicity, and caution signifies a chemical within the category of least potential toxicity.  (Goliath Termite and Pest Control uses products within the least toxic category, for most of their services.)
“All natural” chemicals do not have to pass the same EPA standards as synthetic chemicals.  This is alarming considering many chemicals, found in nature, are lethal at a very low dosage.  The EPA’s testing guidelines for all natural products was set long ago when considerably less was known about chemical toxicity.  At that time it was believed that anything natural was safe, so testing was minimal, in order to expedite getting the product to the market place.  Since then scientist have learned that, all natural, chemical can be very deadly, in many cases.  Sadly, most of the public still believes “natural” mean good and safe.  Consider this quote from “Essentials of Environmental Toxicology” pg 127, a text book used at the University of Texas at Arlington, as recently as 2005, “Although man made products (e.g., industrial chemicals) are thought to exhibit greater toxicity, historical data suggests that naturally occurring substances are a larger concern to human health.”  Also, the following statement by Larry P. Pedigo, author and professor for the Iowa State University, “Many botanicals are of interest to organic gardeners because they are “natural” products.  However, as a group they are no safer than synthetics available to the lay public.”  If you would like our recommendation in regards to a service, best suited for your needs, along with a quote, please contact us by clicking here or call 817-508-9100, and someone will be happy to help you.

Will the service still work if it rains?

Yes.  Most pesticides are originally developed for the food growing industry.  Since most pesticides are developed for the food growing industry they have sticking agents added to them.  “Stickers”, as they are called, are added to help the products stick to the crops though out the rainy season.
Only after going through additional testing are some of the chemicals, which contain stickers, repackaged, renamed, and sold for the use of structural pest control.
In order for the stickers to work properly the pesticides must be allowed to dry on the intended surface.  There are two circumstances that reduce the product’s ability to withstand rain.  One, if the surface is wet, prior to application, the product could be substantially diluted, or run off the intended surface before drying.  Second, if rain falls on the treated surface before the product dries it could be washed away—although this is rare—for two reasons.  First, the application barely wets the surface, so the product usually dries within a few minutes.  Second, due to the homes’ over hanging eves—in the case of residential pest control—rain rarely reaches the cracks and crevices, where application has been made.
In the case of ground applications there are different considerations to keep in mind.  If the desired effect of a ground application is to treat the surface only, the above information applies.  But if the desired effect is to have penetration into the soil, the following applies.  If the ground is extremely dry before application it will absorb the product along with the, as long as the rain doesn’t fall too heavily, too quickly.  If the ground is saturated the product should not be applied, rather, wait until the ground dries enough to absorb water, therefore preventing runoff.
With ground applications, the principle rule is to not allow the product to be carried away from the target site, by means of run off, period.  This rule is meant primarily to prevent pollution, but also to improve the results of the application.
I have personally witnessed homeowners, and some professionals, hurriedly applying pesticides to a lawn while dark rain clouds are glooming overhead, only to see those pesticides washed right into the street and then into the city drainage system moments later.
Goliath Pest Control accounts for all these factors, when timing applications of products.

Will rats or mice die in my attic if you put bait out to get rid of them?

It is possible.  We estimate a 50/50 chance of rodents dying inside your home, if you wait until you have a problem, before putting out bait.  Prevention of infestation will reduce the chances of this greatly.  The best way to do this is by placing heavy duty tamper resistant rodent prevention boxes around the outside of your home or structure.
While exploring the perimeter of your home rats and mice find the bait inside the boxes and eat from it.  After feeding on the bait rodents become sick, and associate being sick with their new environment.  They leave their new environment once they feel sick, because they are neophobic—afraid of what is new.  The prevention boxes are designed to keep children and pets out while allowing rats and mice access to the bait.  Bait is secured inside these boxes and they can only be unlocked with a key.
The rodent prevention boxes should be checked every two months or at the time of your pest control service.  If heavy rodent activity is suspected they should be checked every two weeks or until control is accomplished.  With more boxes, the intervals between checking the boxes can be extended.  Two to four boxes placed in key locations is typical for residential settings.  Around bigger structures boxes should be placed every twenty to thirty feet apart.
Note:  Traps, in most cases, are not used because trapping the entire population of rodents is labor intensive, cost prohibitive, and very difficult to accomplish, because the last members of the colony are usually afraid of traps.
Most communities have rats, mice, or both.  As a general rule, newly developed neighborhoods have field or house mice problems, and well-established neighborhoods have rat problems.  Everyone, sooner or later, has to deal with these pests.

What is an occasional pest?

Occasional pests tend not to develop an infestation inside your home, but they can be reoccurring and necessitate professional pest control services.  The distinction is made because they will not, in most cases, find favorable conditions inside a home to thrive and reproduce.
If recurring problems exist there is most likely something on the inside attracting the pest, or they could just have easy access into your home while they are foraging at night.  A reoccurring problem normally indicates a major breeding source somewhere around the outside of your home.
Examples of occasional pest are: American cockroaches, earwigs, pill bugs, crickets, millipedes, spiders, and others.
Examples of infesting pest are: ants, German cockroaches, pantry pest, rats, mice, fungus gnats from indoor plants, sprigtails, silverfish, and others.

What products does your company use?

Goliath Termite and Pest Control uses a number of different products to manage pests.  Most often we use products categorized by the EPA as the least toxic.  Within that category we primarily use products in the pyrethroid family.
Pyrethroids are easily dealt with by the human body, and are rapidly flushed out of the body.  Pyrethroids are man made and almost identical to pyrethrums.  They were designed to have all of the positive attributes of pyrethrums but not the negatives.
Pyrethrums come from flowers of the Chrysanthemums species grown in Kenya, Ecuador, and other countries.  We use pyrethrums on occasion, but there are draw backs to using this family of chemicals.  Pyrethrums have a very strong odor, and people have to evacuate the premises after heavy usage of them.  They are extremely irritating to a person’s respiratory system, especially anyone with asthma or emphysema.  Exposure to pyrethrums by these people would most likely cause serious allergic reactions.  Pyrethrums are very short lived, twenty four to seventy two hours in most cases.  Ultra Violet light breaks them down very quickly.
For difficult infestations we will choose other types of pesticides.
Pesticides can only be used in an approved location and for an approved pest.  Goliath Termite and Pest Control uses all pesticides in the appropriate and intended manner as stated on the label of the product.  The use of a pesticide in a manner not in accordance with its label is a misapplication and against the law.

Are Fleas worse this year?

Yes.  Fleas are showing signs of resistance to the products that have been successful at preventing them for the past ten years.
Just as some of our medications don’t always work for every person, almost no pesticide works on one hundred percent of the pests that it is meant to control.  The pesticide eliminates only the pests that are susceptible to it.  For example, if a thousand bugs come in contact with a pesticide a small percentage will survive.  The survivors have genes that make them resistant to that pesticide.  Their metabolism breaks down the molecular structure of the pesticide very quickly, rendering it harmless.  When these resistant bugs reproduce, they pass their genes on to the next generation of pests.  Eventually, the entire population possesses the resistant genes.  When this happens the product stops working.  (Most of the products sold in the lawn and garden section of your favorite local retailer have reached this point.  Many of them are older pesticides that have been used extensively for many years and have lost there potency.)
We hope that one of the newer classes of pesticides that are being developed will work as well at preventing fleas, as the chemicals we have had for the past ten years.  Until then the best control of fleas is to have a professional do an intensive treatment to get rid of any infestation.
Have fleas gotten out of control for you?  Goliath Termite and Pest Control can stop fleas from biting you and your pet in less than 24 hours.

Should I do something about the Mosquitoes around my home and if so what?

Yes.  Most importantly you should limit mosquito breeding sights.  Mosquitoes need standing water to reproduce.  It is best to eliminate all standing water.
If you feel you have an over abundance of mosquitoes around your home, and don’t know why, you should do some investigation to find where the problem is coming from.  When investigating, look at least three to four houses or one hundred yards away from your home, in all directions.  Look for any object capable of retaining water for seven or more days.  Some common places, as stated in, “The Handbook of Pest Control” ninth edition, would include ponds, streams, creeks, lake edges, natural containers (e.g., abandoned snail shells, tree holes, and large leaves), depressions, and tunnels of animals.  Also, artificial containers and man-made waterways such as drainage and irrigation ditches, discarded tires, cans, bird baths, gutters, storm drains, and septic tanks.  Also look for areas with heavy vegetation or ground cover.  Mosquitoes rest in shaded areas during day time hours and go out to feed at dusk and dawn.  Try to educate your neighbors about what to look for.
If eliminating the source is not an option, other control measures are available.  Four common control measures are surface applications, larvicides, Gambusia affinis (a type of fish), and misting systems.
A surface application is the quickest and surest solution for getting rid of a mosquito problem without high cost and negative side effects.  A surface application achieves quick results by killing the adult stage.  When you have an event that will be held outside and you don’t want to worry about mosquitoes attacking your family and friends, this is the QUICK SOLUTION.  Goliath Termite and Pest Control treats the surface areas, in the vicinity of where activities will be held.  This service controls mosquitoes for about one month.
Don’t buy a mosquito trap that draws the mosquitoes into some sort of devise in order to capture them.  They’re impressive because of the large number of dead mosquitoes you find inside them, but they are continually attracting new mosquitoes so that the job is never complete.  They leave lots of mosquitoes flying around your lawn.  They do, however, work well for your neighbors, because you are pulling mosquitoes away from their property and onto yours.

How frequently should I have my home serviced for pest?

Every environment and situation is different, but some general assumptions can be made.

  • Service, for most structures, in Texas should be no further apart than three months.
  • The optimum service frequency would be monthly, but this is not always cost efficient or necessary.
  • Service every two months is the best choice, for most homes in Texas.
  • Service for commercial properties should be every two weeks or monthly due to increased volume of traffic, number of entrances, and sanitation issues found around commercial establishments.
  • Service for food handling establishments should be every two week, but absolutely no further apart than one month.

I am a clean person.  Why do I have these bugs?

Our clients are actually cleaner than the general public.  Most of them consider pest control part of good house keeping.  Since you are a clean person there are certain bugs you will not encounter.  However, you will come across the occasional pest.  Occasional pest are not a sign of filth.  To find out more about what occasional pests are, read “What is an occasional pest?”  You could also have problems with some infesting pest that are brought into your home through outside sources, or develop for reasons other than sanitation (e.g., carpenter ants, termites, and bees).

Are these things water bugs or roaches?

Both.  They are American cockroaches, and they have a few other common names: water bug, palmetto bug, and “big giant flying thing.”  They are occasional pests most often.  They are a nocturnal and find their way into your home, usually at night, as they leave there nest in search of food and water.  They can infest the crawl space of pier and beam homes, attics, basements, hot water heater closets, and any other dark moist environment.  But the city sewer system is one of their favorite places.
They infest places that provide shelter from wind and promote organic decay, such as the landscaping around most homes.  Most suburban and urban neighborhoods have the right conditions to accommodate these bugs.
They can be successfully managed by Goliath Termite and Pest Control, and any one of our service plans offer a great solution to the problem of this pest.  If you would like our recommendation in regards to a service, best suited for your needs, along with a quote, please contact us by clicking here or call 817-508-9100, and someone will be happy to help you.

Do the plug-in devices that are suppose to repel pests really work?

No not in a verifiable way.  Jerome Goddard, PhD, medical entomologist with the Mississippi Department of Health, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Mississippi, and the author of Medical Entomology a standard reference for doctors, says that a man a few years ago came to his office wanting him to endorse one of these types of products.  Dr. Goddard asked to see the studies done on the device.  The man fumbled around for a while and finally pulled out a piece of paper.  The paper was a tri-fold brochure for the product the man was selling.  At that point Dr. Goddard thought he would humor the man and asked him just how he knew the product worked.  “Easy” the man replied, “you just turn it on and the mice literally go running out of the building.”  At that point Dr. Goddard said, “Ok, what happens if there’s a pet mouse in the building.”  To that, the man replied, “Oh, pet mice, it doesn’t affect “pet” mice.”  For the best solution to rats and mice read Will rats or mice die in my attic if you put bait out to get rid of them?”

I have termites in my fence.  What should I do about it?

In most cases, you should just replace the wood that the termites have infested and correct whatever attracted the termites in the first place.  Remember not to let the fence pickets touch the ground and don’t pile things next to the fence.
At Goliath Termite and Pest Control, we do not recommend treating a fence for termites, because it cost less to replace the damaged wood than to have a termite treatment done.  Also, a treatment on a fence wouldn’t last long.  Termiticides are intended to be applied next to stationary objects, such as the foundation of a building, in order to prevent movement of the chemical after the treatment.  Water can run under a fence and carry the product away as it passes by.
If termites are close to the home or structure, we recommend treating the areas of the structure closest to where the termites are located, as a preventative measure.  If you would like our recommendation in regards to a service, best suited for your needs, along with a quote, please contact us by clicking here or call 817-508-9100, and someone will be happy to help you.

How long does the service take to work?

Reactive services will take up to twenty one days, but in most cases you will see results within twenty four to seventy two hours.  Pests come in contact with the treated area at night when they are exploring your home for food and water.

Proactive services start working the very first day.  You never notice what is happening because only a few bugs are killed each day and night.  This is one of the benefits of being proactive.
